A new study has identified racial/ethnic disparities related to health-related quality of life (HRQOL), work productivity and activity impairment (WPAI), and health care utilization among patients with ulcerative colitis (UC). Among the findings, Hispanic participants reported higher health care resource utilization (HCRU) and annualized medical costs than non-Hispanic White participants. The cross-sectional study included 1,500 participants with UC from the National Health and Wellness Survey from 2018, 2019, and 2020. Participants&rsquo; self-reported race/ethnicity included non-Hispanic White (1,150 participants; 76.7%), non-Hispanic Black (99 participants; 6.6%), and Hispanic (251 participants; 16.7%). Adjusted analyses showed that participants with moderate/severe UC had significantly worse depression and anxiety than those with mild UC. Moderate/severe UC was also associated with greater impairment across all WPAI measures, including absenteeism and productivity impairment, for the past seven days compared to mild UC. High HCRU and higher direct medical costs were also reported in those with moderate/severe UC compared to mild UC. 
When examining outcomes by race/ethnicity, non-Hispanic Black participants had a better HRQOL than non-Hispanic White participants. &ldquo;Consistent with these results, national studies report a lower lifetime risk of psychiatric disorders among non-Hispanic Black individuals than among non-Hispanic White individuals, despite experiencing higher levels of social and financial adversity,&rdquo; the researchers wrote. Hispanic participants reported more HCRU; this included more health care provider visits, gastroenterologist visits, emergency room visits, and hospitalizations over the last 6 months.
